Scripture for Tantrums: Helping Children Calm Down with God’s Word

Tantrums can leave parents feeling tired, embarrassed, or unsure of what to do next. But a tantrum is not only a behavior problem. Often, it is a heart moment. A child may be tired, hungry, overstimulated, afraid, disappointed, or unable to explain big feelings.

As Christian parents, we can meet these moments with both firmness and gentleness. Before saying many words, try to become calm yourself. A soft voice, a slow breath, and a peaceful posture can help your child settle.

You might say, “I am here. You are safe. We will calm down together.”

Once your child begins to settle, use one short Scripture phrase. Long explanations are usually too much during a tantrum. Try simple verses like “The Lord is my shepherd” from Psalm 23:1, or “When I am afraid, I will trust in You” from Psalm 56:3.

Say the verse slowly. Whisper it. Sing it. Repeat it gently.

Later, when your child is calm, talk about what happened. Ask, “What were you feeling?” or “What could we do differently next time?” This helps children learn that feelings are real, but they do not have to rule the home.

A simple calm-down rhythm can help: sit quietly, take three slow breaths, say one Scripture, pray a short prayer, then talk.

Tantrums are hard, but they are also opportunities to shepherd your child’s heart toward the Lord.
